Introduction to PLI

Introduction:

Globalization advances at a rapid pace in politics, economics, and other fields, and we live in the age of increasing borderless flow of things, people, and money. Nowadays, command of English is required in many fields, in contrast to the past when it was only needed in large companies and some industries; it is also pointed out that the level of English-language skills has a great impact on one’s future including employment and career advancement.

In addition, globalization intensifies the need for coexistence with different cultures and civilization as well as international cooperation. After, Asian Free Trade Area (AFTA) that proclaimed growing rapidly since 2003 will impact the Indonesian nation especially Papua Province and West Papua as a member of the global community; at the same time, we rediscovered the need for dissemination of information overseas and the importance of the English language as a tool to achieve this goal.

On the other hand, Papua young people are recently said to be “inward-oriented”, which can be seen from the decreasing number of high school and university students studying abroad. This inward-mindedness is caused by not only young people’s mind but also by various other factors; however, in the modern society with deepening international competition and coexistence, it is extremely important to develop human resources for activities on a global scale through acquiring language skills and accumulating cross-culture experiences.

English and other foreign languages are important means to greatly expand opportunities for our children who will live in the global society, and an important element of improving Papua’s international competitiveness.

Welcome to The Papua Language Institute (PLI)

The Papua Language Institute (PLI) represents Papua’s solution to the growing demands of globalization and the resulting internationalization of Papua.

The PLI is the first institute to be established in Papua which is entirely focused towards building capacity in languages. The PLI aims to build capacity of local Papuans  by equipping them with the tools they need for global communication. In this sense, the PLI is a gateway for local Papuans to communicate internationally and access global opportunities.

The PLI also serves as a centre for language training for non-native speakers of Bahasa Indonesia who wish to begin learning or improve their Bahasa Indonesia proficiency. In this sense, the PLI also serves as the Melanesian gateway to Indonesia.
